Just the Facts

Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester (formerly New Rochelle Hospital)

When New Rochelle Hospital opened its doors in 1892, it did so to a yellow clapboard house with eight beds and four nurses.  Today, as the largest private teaching hospital in Westchester County, Sound Shore Medical Center provides 252 acute, 50 rehabilitation and 100 extended care beds; more than 550 affiliated physicians; 600 nurses and allied health professionals and nearly 800 support staff. While its location and name have changed and its numbers have grown, SSMC remains true to its founding as a patient-focused, community hospital.  Its mission is to deliver high quality, accessible and affordable healthcare for the people of New York and Connecticut.

From premature newborns in its New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) designated Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit to fragile seniors in the Schaffer Extended Care Center, Sound Shore provides a compassionate, patient-centered continuum of care.  The Medical Center treats over 85,000 patients annually.  As a NYSDOH designated Level II Trauma Center, it serves nearly 36,000 visitors each year in its Emergency Department.

We are identified as Centers of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery as well as 1st Trimester Antepartum Screening, and approved by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons for our high-quality, comprehensive cancer programs. Other notable services include renal dialysis, laparoscopic surgery, orthopaedics, gerontology and sleep medicine. Sound Shore Medical Center clinical results on heart failure, pneumonia, heart attack, and surgical patients, as reported by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, reflect our care as better than the New York State and U.S. averages in many measures, and in a number the outcomes rank Sound Shore in the top 10% of the hospitals in the country.

Sound Shore Medical Center's state-of-the-art medical services are administered by a staff of caring physicians, nurses and allied healthcare professionals who are among the best in their fields and who put SSMC’s slogan into practice daily:

Care. For Life.
